In dictionaries,\u00a0<em>curriculum<\/em>\u00a0is often defined as the courses offered by a school, but it is rarely used in such a general sense in schools.\u00a0Depending on how broadly educators define or employ the term,\u00a0curriculum\u00a0typically refers to the knowledge and skills students are expected to learn, which includes the\u00a0<a title=\"Learning Standards\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edglossary.org\/learning-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning standards<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Learning Objectives\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edglossary.org\/learning-objectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learning objectives<\/a>\u00a0they are expected to meet; the units and lessons that teachers teach; the assignments and projects given to students; the books, materials, videos, presentations, and readings used in a course; and the tests,\u00a0<a title=\"Assessment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edglossary.org\/assessment\/\">assessments<\/a>, and other methods used to evaluate student learning. Teachers in New York State have curricula they must follow in order to meet standards that are passed into law and adopted by the NYSED.
