The U.S. Education Department through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines disability as \"a child evaluated in accordance with \u00a7\u00a7<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.ed.gov\/idea\/regs\/b\/d\/300.304\" aria-label=\"Sec. 300.304 Evaluation procedures\">300.304<\/a>\u00a0through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.ed.gov\/idea\/regs\/b\/d\/300.311\" aria-label=\"Sec. 300.311 Specific documentation for the eligibility determination\">300.311<\/a>\u00a0as having an intellectual disability, a hearing impairment (including deafness), a speech or language impairment, a visual impairment (including blindness), a serious emotional disturbance (referred to in this part as \u201cemotional disturbance\u201d), an orthopedic impairment, autism, traumatic brain injury, an other health impairment, a specific learning disability, deaf-blindness, or multiple disabilities, and who, by reason thereof, needs special education and related services\" (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.ed.gov\/idea\/regs\/b\/a\/300.8\">IDEA, 300.8<\/a>). Schools have a team of professionals to assist students with disabilities, and everyone at the school is responsible for ensuring the needs of all students are met. Students with disabilities are often eligible to receive an Individualized Education Plan or a 504 plan that outlines their accommodations and their goals.\r\n\r\nIt is important to remember that\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\u2022 Students with disabilities are entitled to be included in general education classrooms to the maximum extent appropriate.\r\n\u2022 The inclusion of students with disabilities is good for both students with and without disabilities.\r\n\u2022 Parts (sometimes large parts) of a student\u2019s IEP are implemented in the general education setting.\r\n\u2022 Students with disabilities have educational rights.\r\n\u2022 Students with disabilities are children first and are not defined by their specific disability. (Bateman &amp; Cline, 2016, p. 2)<\/div>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/exceptionalchildren.org\/\">Council for Exceptional Children\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>advocates for appropriate education for students with disabilities.
