{"id":170,"date":"2018-08-02T20:47:18","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T20:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jefferson-collegesuccess\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=170"},"modified":"2018-08-02T20:47:31","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T20:47:31","slug":"group-work-on-problem-solving","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jefferson-collegesuccess\/chapter\/group-work-on-problem-solving\/","title":{"raw":"Group Work on Problem Solving","rendered":"Group Work on Problem Solving"},"content":{"raw":"Received from C.Michael Robinson from St. John Fisher College (spring 2018)\r\n\r\nMoral Dilemma 1\r\n\r\n<em>There is a city of happiness where all of its citizens remain all their lives.\u00a0 It's residents demonstrate civil pride through many celebrations and a commitment to the welfare of its citizens.\u00a0 Several national publications have recognized the city as the best place to live in America.\u00a0 There is no crime and, in fact, there are no law enforcement agencies because there has always been total respect for individuals and the property of those individuals.\u00a0 Everyone has a job and the schools are rated among the best in the Nation.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>In the basement of City Hall, there is a room.\u00a0 It has one locked door, and no window.\u00a0 And in this room sits a child.\u00a0 The child is feeble-minded, malnourished, and neglected.\u00a0 It lives out its days in wretched misery.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Everyone in the city knows that the child is there and the condition of the child.\u00a0 No one knows who the parents of the child are and there are no known relatives.\u00a0 Every citizen understands that the happiness and prosperity of their city is wholly dependent upon the child remaining in the basement room and living in the current conditions.\u00a0 If the child were to be brought out of the basement and cared for, the city would be transformed immediately.\u00a0 It would experience crime, citizens would be disrespectful of each other and abuse each other's property.\u00a0 The public celebrations would cease and the quality of their schools would decline sharply. Unemployment would exist at high rates.<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Those are the terms and the only terms.\u00a0 You cannot change the moral dilemma.\u00a0 <\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Where do you stand and why?<\/em>\r\n\r\n<em>Adapted from \"The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas\" by Ursula K. Le Guin.<\/em>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nMoral Dilemma 2\r\n\r\nYou are the driver of a trolley car hurtling down the track at sixty miles per hour.\u00a0 Up ahead you see five workers standing on the track, tools in hand.
