The early reading covers both the technology of early children’s literature and its heavy pedagogical (teaching) function. Of course, at the time, there was less of an emphasis on children’s individualism and more of a focus on pounding (sometimes literally) facts and morals into them.  That heavy moral emphasis even played into the design of the horn books.
