In doing a SUNY Faculty Guild post, I was reminded of this old Poetry 180 Project poem by Tom Wayman.\u00a0 I would send it to nonparticipants, but they might read it literally!\u00a0 More poems can be found at: https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/180\/013.html<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

\r\n\r\nIt sets so dos and don'ts just like families in our readings perform!\u00a0 I wonder what the culture it teaches could be called? I hope you enjoy it.\u00a0 It's probably too sarcastic for elementary students, but not for high schoolers.\u00a0 What do you make of it?\r\n\r\nDid I Miss Anything?\r\n

Nothing. When we realized you weren\u2019t here\r\nwe sat with our hands folded on our desks\r\nin silence, for the full two hours\r\n\r\n     Everything. I gave an exam worth\r\n     40 percent of the grade for this term\r\n     and assigned some reading due today\r\n     on which I\u2019m about to hand out a quiz\r\n     worth 50 percent\r\n\r\nNothing. None of the content of this course\r\nhas value or meaning\r\nTake as many days off as you like:\r\nany activities we undertake as a class\r\nI assure you will not matter either to you or me\r\nand are without purpose\r\n\r\n     Everything. A few minutes after we began last time\r\n     a shaft of light suddenly descended and an angel\r\n     or other heavenly being appeared\r\n     and revealed to us what each woman or man must do\r\n     to attain divine wisdom in this life and\r\n     the hereafter\r\n     This is the last time the class will meet\r\n     before we disperse to bring the good news to all people  on earth.\r\n\r\nNothing. When you are not present\r\nhow could something significant occur?\r\n\r\n     Everything. Contained in this classroom\r\n     is a microcosm of human experience\r\n     assembled for you to query and examine and ponder\r\n     This is not the only place such an opportunity has been gathered\r\n\r\n     but it was one place\r\n\r\n     And you weren\u2019t here<\/pre>\r\n\u2014Tom Wayman\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>","rendered":"
