{"id":1886,"date":"2021-04-02T12:22:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T12:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jefferson-practicalfoundations\/?post_type=front-matter&#038;p=1886"},"modified":"2021-04-02T12:22:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T12:22:58","slug":"teaching-presentations","status":"publish","type":"front-matter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jefferson-practicalfoundations\/front-matter\/teaching-presentations\/","title":{"raw":"Teaching Presentations","rendered":"Teaching Presentations"},"content":{"raw":"<h2><strong>Teaching Presentations<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nYou will each be responsible for giving three presentations this semester.\u00a0 They are worth 300 points apiece, or 6% of your grade each.\u00a0 I put some links and videos together to help you; they are in our course Wakelet at <a href=\"https:\/\/wke.lt\/w\/s\/2XjJYd\">https:\/\/wke.lt\/w\/s\/2XjJYd<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe presentations should be between five and twelve minutes long.\u00a0 Students will record those using YouTube, Flipgrid, or Screecastify.\u00a0 (Screencastify's free version limits you to five minutes, but you could submit two videos; I'd avoid submitting three!)\r\n<div>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Teaching Presentation 1 must be an elementary level ELA or math lesson.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Presentation 2 must be a science lesson.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Presentation 3 must be a social studies lesson.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFor any presentation, specify the exact grade level.\u00a0 List the New York State Learning Standards for that grade\/subject that are being met by the presentation.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nAlong with each presentation, please submit a 1-2-page double-spaced paper that summarizes your topic and approach to it.\u00a0 I will return these to you with comments and a grade for your efforts.\u00a0 Please take these presentations seriously, as we will often use them as starting point for class discussions.\u00a0 Include the URL for the video in your paper.\r\n\r\nInclude the required materials and any other relevant context.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>You may not use pre-made lessons or lesson templates.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>No reused work from other\/previous courses is allowed.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>No Teachers Pay Teachers materials\/topics\/lessons are allowed. Think on your own. . . that is the point of the presentations.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Format<\/strong>\r\nMany students elect to use PowerPoint. This is not absolutely required, but provision of some visual aids is helpful.\r\n\r\n<strong>Class Presentation<\/strong>\r\nTeach and talk to us. Don't read at us. You may use notes when you make your presentation, but you may not read from a fully written out text or use a text you didn't create.\r\nHere is one way to make a successful presentation (adapted from Colorado State's Writing@CSU site):\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>Do plenty of reading and research. Explore the topic as fully as possible. Make notes.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Read over your notes, and think over the results of your reading.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Discuss your results with your team members. Tentatively plan the presentation in its general outlines.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>On your own again, and setting notes aside, brainstorm and write down all the interesting ideas that you have come up with.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Organize these ideas into a coherent sequence. Return <em>to <\/em>your notes and add any infor-mation relevant to your major ideas which will illustrate or explain them..<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Add an introduction, which tells what you will talk about, and a conclusion which sums up what you have discussed and learned. Cut out any irrelevant or uninteresting material.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Meet with your team members to organize and streamline the presentation.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Visualize yourself giving a talk to the class, going through all these ideas, in a comfortable and relaxed fashion.
