You're sitting on a wooden bench at the edge of a town square at dusk. The sun is setting over a row of shops and other buildings. You don't remember ever being here before and you're not quite sure how you got there.\u00a0<em>What was in that drink?<\/em> you wonder.\r\n\r\nYou stand and get your balance. Rubbing your hands over your face you're surprised and deeply startled by what you feel... not skin!\u00a0 You stumble over to a shop window and stare at your reflection... you're no longer yourself! You're ... an animal?\r\n\r\nYou look up and notice a sign over the door to your left.\r\n\r\n<header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox learning-objectives\">\r\n\r\nThe sign says <strong><em>The Pen and Sword. <\/em><\/strong>\u00a0A sign below that says <em><strong>Home-cooked food, Rooms for Rent.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>You\u2019re a stranger to this area, but it's late and starting to rain. You decide to stop for the night.\r\n\r\nAs you enter you scan the scene. The room is not large, but not cramped. You can smell a delicious aroma of roasted meat, and fresh bread. You can also smell the yeasty, hoppy smell of beer or cider, and you can see bottles of other drinks behind the bar.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"size-medium wp-image-682 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jefferson-socialpsychology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5729\/2021\/08\/Fox-bartender-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>\r\n\r\nTo your left is the bar. The bartender is a round, middle aged fox with dark, rust colored fur and brown hands\/paws? He has short, cupped ears poking out of the curly darker fur on his head. A fox bartender!! At the moment he is frowning at the person before him and seems thoroughly irritated.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cPackson, get lost! I\u2019ve given you a handout 3 times this week. No more! Either drop some coin on the bar for your food, or shove off!\u201d<\/p>\r\nThe person at the bar, \"Packson\" you assume, is thin and stooped. His clothing is worn and torn, but clean. His rumbled fur is light colored, more grey than red, and messy and overlong, but not dirty. He carries a old, much mended rucksack that appears about half full, and grips a cane in his left hand, keeping his weight off his left foot. He is pleading with the bar tender.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSamuel, please. You know I don\u2019t have any right now, but you know I\u2019m good for it. I\u2019ve always paid my bill before! But I ain\u2019t had no work the past week since the factory accident broke my foot.\u00a0 I won\u2019t get paid until I go back \u2013 if they\u2019ll take me back \u2013 and the Doc says that won\u2019t be for another 2 weeks. I\u2019m starving here!\u201d<\/p>\r\nThey continue to argue. You're hungry and thirsty. Maybe you could interrupt them and order something.\r\n\r\nYou look around the rest of the room. To your right are some tables. One large table with 5 chairs is empty, near the large, cheerful fire in the hearth. If you sit there, others can join you for a friendly chat. It's nice to meet new people.\r\n\r\nOne small table with 2 chairs is empty, tucked back into a small, shadowy corner. That one looks private and quite. Sometimes it's nice to not have to talk to others.\r\n\r\nOne large table has 3 people sitting at it, drinking and playing a game with cards and dice \u2013 the game is familiar to you and you\u2019re good at it. They mostly appear friendly, and you hear casual banter and occasional laughter. One player is large, black and white badger with an equally large knife at his side. He glares at you for a moment as you enter. You see a scruffy, shaggy face and dark eyes. Based on the small number of coins in front of him he appears to be losing.\r\n\r\nOne player is an attractive, but tough looking female with long, glossy black feathers. A raven or a crow maybe? She is wearing a loose sleeveless robe and holding her cars with two long, stiff feathers at the end of each wing. She brings her clawed foot up now and then to adjust the order of her cards. She also looks up at you briefly, smiles, and then looks back at the game.\u00a0 She is wearing a large gem on a cord around her neck. She has the largest pile of coins in front of her.\r\n\r\nThe third player\u2026 is a fox. You look again, yep, it's a large, humanoid, lady fox, wearing a vest of blue velvet. Must be in on the costume party, you think. Their fur is light orange with darker russet fur at the tip of their nose, and ears and tail. They have a moderate number of coins in front of them, and they must have a good hand of cards, because you can just hear some soft purring.\u00a0 They look up at you and wink.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cHey, here\u2019s a 4th player! Come on over stranger! The game\u2019s better with 4!\u201d<\/p>\r\nYou like playing cards and you've never played with a fox lady before!\r\n\r\nYou see stairs to a second level in the back of the room and a sign that says:\u00a0<strong><em>Rooms for rent \u2013 By the hour, night, or week. Payment due up front! Housekeeping extra.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>You're tired, even though you just woke up. A quick retreat to a quiet room and sleep might be a good idea. Maybe things will make more sense later.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/header><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>How do you handle this shocking situation? Where will you choose to begin? Do you seek sustenance, new friends, excitement, or rest and solitude? What influences your decisions?
