{"id":659,"date":"2017-10-23T23:32:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T23:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jeffersoncc-americanlit1\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=659"},"modified":"2017-11-20T17:58:32","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T17:58:32","slug":"edwards-rhetorical-grid-assignment","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-jeffersoncc-americanlit1\/chapter\/edwards-rhetorical-grid-assignment\/","title":{"raw":"Edwards Rhetorical Grid Assignment","rendered":"Edwards Rhetorical Grid Assignment"},"content":{"raw":"As we noted at the start of the course, the broad units (in terms of time, geography, ethnic groups and social change) will challenge our ability to talk about pieces of literature <em>within<\/em> the units.\u00a0 Still, we have outlined some basic problems with which American writers are concerned:\r\n\r\nRelationships to the universe\r\n\r\nConfronting the Europeans (both for Indians and settlers, since the settlers carried all that European cultural and religious baggage)\r\n\r\nSelf-awareness that one is playing a historical part\r\n\r\nSelf-promotion versus modesty\r\n\r\nExpressions of idealism and also of economic chances (with these often clashing or creating hypocrisy)\r\n\r\nPuritan vs. Quaker ideals\r\n\r\nThe physical world connecting to the spiritual world\r\n\r\nSelf-denial vs. Celebration\r\n\r\nOrality and literacy\r\n\r\nEach of these ideas or conflicts plays into our growing understanding of what it means even to attempt to answer \u201cWhat is an American?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 We will apply these concepts throughout the course.\u00a0 Rhetoric, as you know, is persuasion using the available means.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/literarydevices.net\/rhetoric\/\">list of rhetorical terms<\/a> is linked here.\r\n\r\n\u201cSinners in the Hands of an Angry God\u201d remains Jonathan Edwards\u2019s most well-known sermon.\u00a0 What specific rhetorical techniques does he employ that would have had the effect of galvanizing his audience?\u00a0 (<em>Galvanize<\/em> = to stimulate somebody to great action.)\u00a0 As you know, rhetoric is the art of using the available means of persuasion.\u00a0 Think of audience, purpose, and the techniques he uses to get his job done.
