Explanatory Reports<\/h2>\r\nThere are two types of explanatory reports: a Procedure Explanation<\/span>\u00a0(which is a 2nd<\/sup> Person Instructional Report)<\/span>, and a Process Explanation<\/span>. These reports do not<\/b> give opinions, only the explanation on how to do something or how something is done.\r\n\r\nA Procedure Explanation directly tells how to perform the steps, using the second-person you<\/em>, whereas the Process Explanation explains how the steps are\/were performed, using either the first-person I<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0we<\/em>,\u00a0or third-person\u00a0he<\/em>\/she<\/em>\/it<\/em>\/they<\/em>.\r\n

Procedure Explanation\/2nd<\/sup> Person Instructional Report<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\r\nAs an\u00a0example, if I were stranded on the interstate with a flat tire and needed to know how to change it, I might call you and you would give me step-by-step instructions that I would need to follow. This would be a Procedure Instructional Explanation, using the\u00a0second person (understood you):<\/i><\/span>\r\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> Open the trunk.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> Remove the jack.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> Etc.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n

Process Explanation<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\r\n

Process Explanations can be classified into three categories: Processes in which people are the agents of the action; Processes in which machines are the agents of the action, and Processes in which nature is\u00a0the agent of the action.\u00a0These reports are referred to as Third Person Instructional Reports.<\/b><\/p>\r\n

Processes by\u00a0People<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n

If I knew you had been stranded on the interstate, I might ask how you fixed your flat tire. You would tell me step-by-step how you\u00a0did this (using the first person I<\/em>), but never expect me to do it.<\/p>\r\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i> I opened the trunk.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n

You would explain step-by-step how this machine works (using the third person, it<\/em>).\r\n\r\nProcesses\u00a0by Nature<\/em><\/strong>\r\n\r\nYou may explain\u00a0beach\u00a0erosion, explaining the step-by-step process (using the third person, it<\/em>).\r\n

Note that headings, subheadings, and visuals are important in instructional reports. Procedure reports (2nd<\/sup> person Instructional reports), will have major steps, followed by a sub steps and markers. Process reports will have headings, subheading, and markers. Both reports will have visuals.<\/p>\r\n
