{"id":2599,"date":"2018-01-04T19:10:16","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T19:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-ncc-zeliart\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=2599"},"modified":"2018-10-03T19:14:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T19:14:47","slug":"ancient-eygptian-art-an-outline","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-ncc-zeliart\/chapter\/ancient-eygptian-art-an-outline\/","title":{"raw":"Ancient Egyptian Art: An Outline","rendered":"Ancient Egyptian Art: An Outline"},"content":{"raw":"In Ancient Egypt (as in Mesopotamia) the development of civilization and life in cities depended on the presence of a river, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/realarchaeology\/2017\/04\/09\/impact-of-the-nile-river-on-ancient-egypt\/\">Nile<\/a>, whose yearly flood (called the inundation) left behind a rich deposit of soil which provided a rich source of nutrients for the crops that would feed the expanding population who founded the great cities of the Ancient Egyptian world.\r\n\r\nEarly in Egyptian society the great themes that animated Egyptian culture became apparent:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/article\/885\/the-egyptian-pantheon\/\">rich mythology with a pantheon of gods<\/a> who maintained the balance within the universe and whose presence explained the mysteries of the cosmos<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a fascination with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/article\/1050\/death-in-ancient-egypt\/\">life after death <\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>a strong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/pharaoh\/\">centralized monarchy focused on god-kings or pharaohs<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThe Cosmology (the theory of the origin and structure of the universe) was conceived by the Egyptians as an earth as a flat platter floating on the waters of the underworld.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Egyptian_creation_myths\">Egyptian mythology, at the beginning of time, the Nile\u2019s primordial waters brought forth a mound of silt<\/a>, out of which emerged the self-generating sun god; from that god, the rest of Egypt\u2019s gods were born.\r\n\r\nThe Ancient Egyptians believed that their pharaohs were the divine agents of the gods.\u00a0 This is called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Egyptian_Government\/\">theocracy<\/a>.\u00a0 It means that the people are ruled by the gods or by the god\u2019s representative.\u00a0 The monarch or in this case the pharaoh represents the divine will of the gods.
