In all academic writing,\u00a0<\/span>Quotations must have appropriate punctuation.<\/em><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

\r\n\r\nIn order to determine how to punctuate the phrase that comes before a quotation, you need to know whether the phase is an independent clause.\u00a0 Here, you have three options:\r\n

1. When the quotation ends the sentence and there is no citation, place the period inside the quotation marks.<\/h2>\r\n

Scott informed Zelda, \"You must stop jumping into fountains.\"<\/span><\/h3>\r\n

2. If the quotation comes at the end of the sentence and then there is a parenthetical citation, place the period to the right of the citation.<\/h2>\r\n

In his famous speech \"The Ballot or the Bullet,\" M<\/span>alcolm X observes, \"The government has failed us. You can't deny that\" (45).<\/span><\/h3>\r\n

She knows she is no longer safe, saying, \u201cI fe<\/span>ared for my Safety in this wicked House\u201d (28).<\/span><\/h3>\r\n

Macbeth says, \u201cLife's but a walking shadow\u201d (5.5.24).<\/span><\/h3>\r\n
