{"id":280,"date":"2019-07-14T17:13:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-14T17:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-oneonta-education106\/?post_type=chapter&#038;p=280"},"modified":"2019-08-09T14:19:15","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T14:19:15","slug":"2-4","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/courses.lumenlearning.com\/suny-oneonta-education106\/chapter\/2-4\/","title":{"raw":"2.4 The students you will be teaching","rendered":"2.4 The students you will be teaching"},"content":{"raw":"<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-281 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/courses-images\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3347\/2019\/07\/14171106\/millennials_2x-1024x393.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"393\" \/>\r\n<div style=\"font-weight: 400\">\r\n\r\nWe have heard a lot about Millennials (born 1981-1996) and\u00a0all of\u00a0the characteristics that go along with this group.\u00a0 However, most students entering college these days are considered Generation Z (Gen Z).\u00a0\u00a0Gen Z is loosely\u00a0defined as anyone born between 1996 and 2015, \u201c...this group makes up a quarter of the U.S. population and by 2020 will account for 40% of all consumers,\u201d (Finch, 2015, np).\u00a0 Gen Z are currently between 4-24 years old (nearly 74 million in U.S.) and it\u2019s safe to say will make up\u00a0a majority of\u00a0students in your future classrooms.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div style=\"font-weight: 400\">\r\n<div>\r\n\r\nThis cohort has grown up post 9\/11 and in a world of terrorism, recession, racial unrest, corporate scandals and financial insecurity.\u00a0 They have never known a world without access to internet technology and have grown up with iPads and iPhones in their hands. They have the background knowledge to be experienced with digital literacy, but likely do not practice caution in their digital media use.\u00a0 Even though Gen Z spends a lot of time on social media, they seem to be pretty good at deciphering true from false information in record time.
