Purpose: You will meet with a classmate in person, over Zoom, or via a phone call to practice using Spanish to describe how things normally are with the verb ser versus how they are right now with the verb estar. The collaboration part of this activity will take approximately 10 minutes, so plan accordingly. You will each have access to the same information, and you will take turns describing the pictures in Spanish.
PDF download: ¿Cómo es? ¿Cómo está ahora?
After you work with your partner through the information, you will independently write a reflection about your experience doing this activity.
Task: With your partner, take turns describing the pairs of photos you see. Estudiante 1 will use ser and estar to describe sets 2 and 4 following the example (set 1). Estudiante 2 will use ser and estar to describe sets 3 and 5. As you are listening to your partner describe the photos, take notes of the verb and descriptive adjectives used with each photo. You will need these notes for the next step: your Reporte.
After you complete the activity with your partner, you will write a Reporte where you answer the following questions in Spanish in a short paragraph:
- ¿Cómo se llama tu compañero de clase?
- ¿Cómo son las cosas en las fotos de la izquierda de tu compañero? ¿Cómo están los lugares en las fotos de la derecha de tu compañero?
- Usa tu imaginación para escribir una oración original usando ‘ser’ + adjetivo y una oración original usando ‘estar’ + adjetivo.
Criteria: 100% of the grade for this activity comes from your Reporte addressing questions 1-3 on the previous Task portion above. If you are unsure about how your instructor wants you to submit this assignment (i.e. upload a word processing file, upload media, etc.), please ask for clarification before beginning.
