Reflexive verbs that refer to emotions.<\/h4>\r\nAs we learned in the beginning of the chapter, in reflexive verbs the subject does the action to him\/her\/itself. But there are some reflexive verbs in Spanish that use the reflexive pronoun to show how one is feeling, especially the onset of an emotional or physical state. These are often expressed in English with \u201cto get\u201d + adjective; be very careful not to translate such English idioms literally! Use the reflexive verb instead. Below are common reflexive emotional verbs and their non-reflexive (transitive) forms for comparison:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Reciprocal verbs<\/h4>\r\nReciprocal verbs are used to talk about actions that people do to each other. Reciprocal verbs are formed by the combination of a reflexive pronoun and a verb, very similar to the reflexive verbs. Since reciprocal actions always involve two or more people, only plural pronouns are considered reciprocal:\r\n\r\n1a persona plural:\u00a0\u00a0nos<\/strong> (to, for, from, or off ourselves \/ each other<\/em>)\r\n2a persona plural:\u00a0\u00a0os<\/strong> (to, for, from, or off yourselves \/ each other<\/em>)\r\n3a persona plural:\u00a0\u00a0se<\/strong> (to, for, from, or off themselves, yourselves \/ each other<\/em>)\r\n

Reciprocal or Reflexive<\/h4>\r\nSentences with reciprocal actions sometimes look just like sentences with reflexive actions. To differentiate a reflexive action from a reciprocal action, the use of expressions such as \u201cel uno al otro\u201d, \u201cuno a otro\u201d, \u201cmutuamente\u201d, \u201crec\u00edprocamente\u201d, \u201centre s\u00ed\u201d, etc. can be added to a phrase to show that the subjects are performing the action on each other. All these expressions can be roughly translated as \"each other\u201d, \u201cone another\u201d, or \u201cmutually\u201d.\r\n\r\nTo specify that an action is reflexive, we can use phrases like \u201ca s\u00ed mismo\u201d (to him\/herself<\/em>) or \u201ca s\u00ed mismos\u201d (to themselves<\/em>).\r\n
