Two key problems led to the initial formulation of calculus: (1) the tangent problem, or how to determine the slope of a line tangent to a curve at a point; and (2) the area problem, or how to determine the area under a curve.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"fs-id1170573393290\" class=\"bc-section section\">\r\n<h1>The Tangent Problem and Differential Calculus<\/h1>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573581969\">Rate of change is one of the most critical concepts in calculus. We begin our investigation of rates of change by looking at the graphs of the three lines [latex]f(x)=-2x-3, \\, g(x)=\\frac{1}{2}x+1[\/latex], and [latex]h(x)=2[\/latex], shown in <a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001\">(Figure)<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"975\"]<img src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/courses-images\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2332\/2018\/01\/11202818\/CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001.jpg\" alt=\"Three graphs of different linear functions are shown. The rate of change of a linear function is constant in each of these three graphs, with the constant determined by the slope.[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573436660\">As we move from left to right along the graph of [latex]f(x)=-2x-3[\/latex], we see that the graph decreases at a constant rate. For every 1 unit we move to the right along the [latex]x[\/latex]-axis, the [latex]y[\/latex]-coordinate decreases by 2 units. This <span class=\"no-emphasis\">rate of change<\/span> is determined by the slope (\u22122) of the line. Similarly, the slope of 1\/2 in the function [latex]g(x)[\/latex] tells us that for every change in [latex]x[\/latex] of 1 unit there is a corresponding change in [latex]y[\/latex] of 1\/2 unit. The function [latex]h(x)=2[\/latex] has a slope of zero, indicating that the values of the function remain constant. We see that the slope of each linear function indicates the rate of change of the function.<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573403364\">Compare the graphs of these three functions with the graph of [latex]k(x)=x^2[\/latex] (<a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_002\">(Figure)<\/a>). The graph of [latex]k(x)=x^2[\/latex] starts from the left by decreasing rapidly, then begins to decrease more slowly and level off, and then finally begins to increase\u2014slowly at first, followed by an increasing rate of increase as it moves toward the right. Unlike a linear function, no single number represents the rate of change for this function. The function [latex]k(x)=x^2[\/latex] does not have a constant rate of change.[\/caption]<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573328521\">We can approximate the rate of change of a function [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at a point [latex](a,f(a))[\/latex] on its graph by taking another point [latex](x,f(x))[\/latex] on the graph of [latex]f(x)[\/latex], drawing a line through the two points, and calculating the slope of the resulting line. Its slope is given by<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"fs-id1170573290247\" class=\"equation\">[latex]m_{\\sec}=\\frac{f(x)-f(a)}{x-a}[\/latex].<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573384217\">The accuracy of approximating the rate of change of the function with a secant line depends on how close [latex]x[\/latex] is to [latex]a[\/latex]. As we see in <a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_004\">(Figure)<\/a>, if [latex]x[\/latex] is closer to [latex]a[\/latex], the slope of the secant line is a better measure of the rate of change of [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at [latex]a[\/latex].<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div id=\"CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_004\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">[caption id=\"\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"487\"]<img src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/courses-images\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2332\/2018\/01\/11202828\/CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_004.jpg\" alt=\"This graph is the same as the previous secant line and generic curved function graph. As x gets closer to a, the slope of the secant line becomes a better approximation to the rate of change of the function [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at a.[\/caption]<\/div>\r\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573570406\">The secant lines themselves approach a line that is called the tangent to the function [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at [latex]a[\/latex] (<a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_005\">(Figure)<\/a>). The slope of the <strong>tangent<\/strong> line to the graph at [latex]a[\/latex] measures the rate of change of the function at [latex]a[\/latex]. This value also represents the derivative of the function [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at [latex]a[\/latex], or the rate of change of the function at [latex]a[\/latex]. Can we use these same ideas to create a reasonable definition of the instantaneous velocity at a given time [latex]t=a[\/latex]? We start by approximating the instantaneous velocity with an average velocity. First, recall that the speed of an object traveling at a constant rate is the ratio of the distance traveled to the length of time it has traveled. Furthermore, to find the slope of a tangent line at a point [latex]a[\/latex], we let the [latex]x[\/latex]-values approach [latex]a[\/latex] in the slope of the secant line. Similarly, to find the instantaneous velocity at time [latex]a[\/latex], we let the [latex]t[\/latex]-values approach [latex]a[\/latex] in the average velocity. This process of letting [latex]x[\/latex] or [latex]t[\/latex] approach [latex]a[\/latex] in an expression is called taking a<strong> limit<\/strong>. Many quantities in physics\u2014for example, quantities of work\u2014may be interpreted as the area under a curve. We approximate the area by dividing up the interval [latex][a,b][\/latex] into smaller intervals in the shape of rectangles. We begin our investigation of rates of change by looking at the graphs of the three lines [latex]f(x)=-2x-3, \\, g(x)=\\frac{1}{2}x+1[\/latex], and [latex]h(x)=2[\/latex], shown in <a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001\">(Figure)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div style=\"width: 985px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/courses-images\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2332\/2018\/01\/11202818\/CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_001.jpg\" alt=\"Three graphs of different linear functions are shown. For every 1 unit we move to the right along the [latex]x[\/latex]-axis, the [latex]y[\/latex]-coordinate decreases by 2 units. This <span class=\"no-emphasis\">rate of change<\/span> is determined by the slope (\u22122) of the line. Similarly, the slope of 1\/2 in the function [latex]g(x)[\/latex] tells us that for every change in [latex]x[\/latex] of 1 unit there is a corresponding change in [latex]y[\/latex] of 1\/2 unit. The function [latex]h(x)=2[\/latex] has a slope of zero, indicating that the values of the function remain constant. We see that the slope of each linear function indicates the rate of change of the function.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fs-id1170573403364\">Compare the graphs of these three functions with the graph of [latex]k(x)=x^2[\/latex] (<a class=\"autogenerated-content\" href=\"#CNX_Calc_Figure_02_01_002\">(Figure)<\/a>). The graph of [latex]k(x)=x^2[\/latex] starts from the left by decreasing rapidly, then begins to decrease more slowly and level off, and then finally begins to increase\u2014slowly at first, followed by an increasing rate of increase as it moves toward the right. Unlike a linear function, no single number represents the rate of change for this function. The slope of the <strong>tangent<\/strong> line to the graph at [latex]a[\/latex] measures the rate of change of the function at [latex]a[\/latex]. This value also represents the derivative of the function [latex]f(x)[\/latex] at [latex]a[\/latex], or the rate of change of the function at [latex]a[\/latex]. First, recall that the speed of an object traveling at a constant rate is the ratio of the distance traveled to the length of time it has traveled.
