There is protest from women, ethnic and religious minorities, and from persons concerned about the state of the environment.\u00a0 There are militia movements in the United States claiming to be concerned about a vast international conspiracy, and terrorist organizations claming the right to free one or another group from tyranny.\u00a0 World-system theorists\u00a0see many of these protests as \"antisystemic,\" that is as directed against the expansion of the culture of capitalism.\u00a0 The readings in this section each addresses some facet of this protest.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>A. Minority Protest<\/strong>\r\n\r\nAmong the groups marginalized by the expansion of the culture of capitalism are minority groups.\u00a0 In some cases the causes for marginalization are economic, the need to maintain a ready supply of cheap labor.\u00a0 In other cases, minority groups, particularly migrants, become symbols that can be used by agents of the nation-state to help create an imagined national identity; minorities are depicted as \"outsiders,\" in order to help define the \"real\" citizens.\u00a0 The following selections focus on Black protest in the United States\r\n\r\nReading 4.\u00a0Documents from the Black Panther Party\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.marxists.org\/history\/usa\/workers\/black-panthers\/\" target=\"_top\">http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/usa\/workers\/black-panthers\/<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe civil rights movements of the 1950s and 60s in the United States created numerous protest movements, some viewed as more radical than others.\u00a0 One group that was defined as among the most radical was the Black Panther Party.\u00a0 This document from 1970 outlines some the goals of the Party along with descriptions of government actions to suppress their activities\r\n\r\nReading 5.\u00a0\u00a0Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ciesin.org\/docs\/010-278\/010-278chpt2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.ciesin.org\/docs\/010-278\/010-278chpt2.html<\/a>\r\n\r\nOne example of the marginalization of minorities in the United States is the extent to which they are exposed to environmental hazzards to a far greater extent than others.\u00a0 This selection\u00a0 from\u00a0<em>Dumping in Dixie\u00a0<\/em>by Robert D. Bullard documents the greater exposure of minorities and the poor to environmental pollution.\r\n\r\nReading 6.\u00a0Pollution-Weary Minorities Try Civil Rights Tack\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ejnet.org\/ej\/civilrights.html\">http:\/\/www.ejnet.org\/ej\/civilrights.html<\/a>\r\n\r\nNIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) became the battle cry of environmental protestors during the 1980\u2019s. The hazardous waste they protested found its way to the back yards of those with the least power to stop it. The following articles discuss how these minorities are fighting to stop the flow of environmental hazards to their neighborhoods.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>C. Feminest Protest<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWhile the modern feminist movement has helped raise the status of women, at least in the West, women remain among the most economically, politically, and socially marginalized members of global society.\u00a0 Consequently, worldwide there are movements to improve the economic and social condition of women.\u00a0 In spite of some gains, however, the economic position of women in global society remains, as a whole, marginal to that of men. For example, women represent about 60 percent of the billion or so people earning $1.00 or less per day.\u00a0 The following selections provide illustrates the forms that feminist protest is taking in various areas of the world.\r\n\r\nReading 7.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ids.ac.uk\/bridge\/re42.pdf\">Global Trade expansion and<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ids.ac.uk\/bridge\/re42.pdf\">\u00a0liberalisation: gender issues andimpacts\u00a0<\/a>(PDF)\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.bridge.ids.ac.uk\/reports\/re42c.pdf\">http:\/\/www.bridge.ids.ac.uk\/reports\/re42c.pdf<\/a>\r\n\r\nThis study prepared for the Department for International Development (DFID) UK\u00a0by Marzia Fontana, Susan Joekes and Rachel Masika examines the impact of trade expansion on the rights of women and the benefits and negative features of expanded trade.\u00a0 The report concludes that \"The consequences of trade liberalisation and expansion for women both absolutely, and\u00a0relative to men, have been mixed, with both positive and negative features, depending\u00a0on a range of factors and preconditions. These include gendered patterns of rights in\u00a0resources, female labour force participation rates, education levels and gaps by gender\u00a0and patterns of labour market discrimination and segregation, as well as socio-cultural\u00a0environments.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>D. Environmental Protest<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThere is little question, as we have seen, that the culture of capitalism is environmentally destructive and that the need for perpetual economic growth requires perpetual environmental exploitation. But, as in changes in other areas of life, such as agriculture, technology, and family structure, not everyone suffers equally. It is true that everyone may be affected by global warming and the increase in acid rain, but not everyone is affected by the flooding of farmland or hunting territories, disposal of waste products, or pollution of water supplies. These problems are disproportionally borne by people who inhabit the margins and periphery of the culture of capitalism.\r\n\r\nReading 8:\u00a0Violence Escalates in the Name of Environmentalism\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.csmonitor.com\/1998\/1026\/102698.us.us.2.html\" target=\"_top\">http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/1998\/1026\/102698.us.us.2.html<\/a>\r\n\r\nCorporations strive to maximize return on investments in order to encourage further investment in their activities, often at the expense of the environment. When they succeed, stockholders re-invest and more growth occurs at further ex\r\n\r\npense to the environment. Frustration at their inability to stop the damages cause by powerful corporations has led to recent violent acts. Will violence become the new weapon of the environmental movement?\r\n\r\nReading 9:\u00a0Revolutionary Ecology\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.judibari.org\/revolutionary-ecology.html\">http:\/\/www.judibari.org\/revolutionary-ecology.html<\/a>\r\n\r\nAn essay by the late Judy Bari that outlines the philosophy behind Earth First!\u00a0 In the article Bari explains the rationale behind \"deep ecology,\" and \"biocentrism,\" and offers them as alternatives to both capitalism and communism.\u00a0 The article articulates well the view that capitalism (as well as communism) fails to consider the damage it does to the environment, and that, unless radical changes are made, the Earth will be systematically destroyed.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>E. Minority Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the groups marginalized by the expansion of the culture of capitalism are minority groups.\u00a0 In some cases the causes for marginalization are economic, the need to maintain a ready supply of cheap labor.\u00a0 In other cases, minority groups, particularly migrants, become symbols that can be used by agents of the nation-state to help create an imagined national identity; minorities are depicted as &#8220;outsiders,&#8221; in order to help define the &#8220;real&#8221; citizens.\u00a0 The following selections focus on Black protest in the United States<\/p>\n<p>Reading 4.\u00a0Documents from the Black Panther Party<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.marxists.org\/history\/usa\/workers\/black-panthers\/\" target=\"_top\">http:\/\/www.marxists.org\/history\/usa\/workers\/black-panthers\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The civil rights movements of the 1950s and 60s in the United States created numerous protest movements, some viewed as more radical than others.\u00a0 One group that was defined as among the most radical was the Black Panther Party.\u00a0 This document from 1970 outlines some the goals of the Party along with descriptions of government actions to suppress their activities<\/p>\n<p>Reading 5.\u00a0\u00a0Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ciesin.org\/docs\/010-278\/010-278chpt2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.ciesin.org\/docs\/010-278\/010-278chpt2.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One example of the marginalization of minorities in the United States is the extent to which they are exposed to environmental hazzards to a far greater extent than others.\u00a0 This selection\u00a0 from\u00a0<em>Dumping in Dixie\u00a0<\/em>by Robert D. Bullard documents the greater exposure of minorities and the poor to environmental pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Reading 6.\u00a0Pollution-Weary Minorities Try Civil Rights Tack<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ejnet.org\/ej\/civilrights.html\">http:\/\/www.ejnet.org\/ej\/civilrights.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) became the battle cry of environmental protestors during the 1980\u2019s. The hazardous waste they protested found its way to the back yards of those with the least power to stop it. The following articles discuss how these minorities are fighting to stop the flow of environmental hazards to their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C. Feminest Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the modern feminist movement has helped raise the status of women, at least in the West, women remain among the most economically, politically, and socially marginalized members of global society.\u00a0 Consequently, worldwide there are movements to improve the economic and social condition of women.\u00a0 In spite of some gains, however, the economic position of women in global society remains, as a whole, marginal to that of men. For example, women represent about 60 percent of the billion or so people earning $1.00 or less per day.\u00a0 The following selections provide illustrates the forms that feminist protest is taking in various areas of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Reading 7.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ids.ac.uk\/bridge\/re42.pdf\">Global Trade expansion and<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.ids.ac.uk\/bridge\/re42.pdf\">\u00a0liberalisation: gender issues andimpacts\u00a0<\/a>(PDF)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.bridge.ids.ac.uk\/reports\/re42c.pdf\">http:\/\/www.bridge.ids.ac.uk\/reports\/re42c.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This study prepared for the Department for International Development (DFID) UK\u00a0by Marzia Fontana, Susan Joekes and Rachel Masika examines the impact of trade expansion on the rights of women and the benefits and negative features of expanded trade.\u00a0 The report concludes that &#8220;The consequences of trade liberalisation and expansion for women both absolutely, and\u00a0relative to men, have been mixed, with both positive and negative features, depending\u00a0on a range of factors and preconditions. These include gendered patterns of rights in\u00a0resources, female labour force participation rates, education levels and gaps by gender\u00a0and patterns of labour market discrimination and segregation, as well as socio-cultural\u00a0environments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>D. Environmental Protest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is little question, as we have seen, that the culture of capitalism is environmentally destructive and that the need for perpetual economic growth requires perpetual environmental exploitation. But, as in changes in other areas of life, such as agriculture, technology, and family structure, not everyone suffers equally. It is true that everyone may be affected by global warming and the increase in acid rain, but not everyone is affected by the flooding of farmland or hunting territories, disposal of waste products, or pollution of water supplies. These problems are disproportionally borne by people who inhabit the margins and periphery of the culture of capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>Reading 8:\u00a0Violence Escalates in the Name of Environmentalism<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.csmonitor.com\/1998\/1026\/102698.us.us.2.html\" target=\"_top\">http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/1998\/1026\/102698.us.us.2.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Corporations strive to maximize return on investments in order to encourage further investment in their activities, often at the expense of the environment. When they succeed, stockholders re-invest and more growth occurs at further ex<\/p>\n<p>pense to the environment. Frustration at their inability to stop the damages cause by powerful corporations has led to recent violent acts. Will violence become the new weapon of the environmental movement?<\/p>\n<p>Reading 9:\u00a0Revolutionary Ecology<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160307062737\/http:\/www.judibari.org\/revolutionary-ecology.html\">http:\/\/www.judibari.org\/revolutionary-ecology.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An essay by the late Judy Bari that outlines the philosophy behind Earth First!\u00a0 In the article Bari explains the rationale behind &#8220;deep ecology,&#8221; and &#8220;biocentrism,&#8221; and offers them as alternatives to both capitalism and communism.\u00a0 The article articulates well the view that capitalism (as well as communism) fails to consider the damage it does to the environment, and that, unless radical changes are made, the Earth will be systematically destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>E.
