He\u2019s talking to a couple of other managers after the weekly departmental meeting. He is filling them in on an issue he\u2019s having with one of his team members, James.\r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019m completely fed up with James. I\u2019ve been waiting on him to complete a new production schedule for two weeks, and we\u2019re going to miss our deadline.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cReally? That doesn\u2019t sound like James,\u201d replies Sandra, one of the managers. \u201cHave you said anything to him about it?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cOf course I have. I went up to him again two days ago and asked if the new schedule would be ready today. He told me it still wasn\u2019t finished. I can\u2019t believe he\u2019s ignoring my request!\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cWell, based on what you just told me, you didn\u2019t actually make a request. You just asked a question.\u201d\r\n\r\nTony looks surprised and says, \u201cWhat do you mean? He has to know that the only reason I\u2019m asking is that I need it right now.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cAre you sure he knows? That\u2019s not what I heard you say.\u201d\r\n\r\nCommunication is easy, right? After all, we learned to communicate during our first years of life, and we\u2019ve been doing it ever since. Unfortunately, it isn\u2019t that simple. Almost every aspect of management requires communication skills; however, time and time again, ineffective communication leads to business problems\u2014and at times, disasters!\r\n\r\nIn this module, you\u2019ll take a look at principles of communication and learn about barriers to effective communication.
