Preparing Ahead of Time

Ideally, you will have access to the list of participants ahead of the event date who’ve signed up for each breakout session. As part of the registration process, attendees will be asked to identify which session they plan to attend, and what course and/or discipline they’d like to work with as part of the workshop.

When possible, familiarize yourself with OER offerings associated with the courses identified by registrants. You can opt to work with the SUNY OER Services team to identify a set of resources to have in hand, ready for each participant. Consider adapting a handout or live Google Doc for your presentation, similar to this one:

If you’d like to get help with this handout, please give the SOS office at least 48 hours lead time.

Note: last-minute changes always come up, and that’s okay. Like other teaching situations, the art of improvisation comes in handy!

Another note: attendees may identify courses that are challenging, in terms of using OER textbooks. It never hurts to open the session by asking people to consider the course that will have the biggest impact if they move it to OER, even if they identified a different one when registering. For instance, a faculty member may have signed up intending to explore her 300-level Cellular Neurobiology course, but is inspired by you to look at what resources might be easier to incorporate into her Introduction to Biology I course, instead.
