Valued more as marginal investments and social safety valves where the poor could be released, these colonies nonetheless created a foothold for Britain on a vast North American continent. And although the seventeenth century would be fraught for Britain\u2013religious, social, and political upheavals would behead one king and force another to flee his throne\u2013settlers in\u00a0Massachusetts and Virginia were nonetheless tied together by the\u00a0emerging Atlantic economy. While commodities such as\u00a0tobacco and sugar fueled new markets\u00a0in Europe, the economy grew\u00a0increasingly dependent upon slave labor. Enslaved Africans transported across the Atlantic would further complicate the collision of cultures in the Americas. The creation and maintenance of a slave\u00a0system would spark new understandings of human difference and new modes of social control.
