2.5 Reading a Contemporary Illustration Essay

Read the following illustration essay, “What Does Trump’s Golfing Reveal about His Personality?” by Jessica Brown, published on JSTOR Daily on 8/2/17.

Notice how the different sections of the essay are set apart by a set of three asterisks. Think of each section as the different parts of an essay: the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. In this case, Brown’s introduction is four paragraphs long.

In the second section (which would be her first body paragraph), Brown discusses the issue of leisure time to illustrate her main point about Trump’s personality. Within this section she uses more examples to discuss this subtopic of leisure time. Pay careful attention to the types of examples she uses in this section.

  • What types of examples and how many of each does she use in this section?
  • How does her subtopic of leisure time relate to Trump’s personality?

Answer these questions for the remaining sections. By the end you should have a comprehensive list of types of examples and subtopics that all serve to illustrate Brown’s main idea.
