Instructions: Open the document, “Climate Change Booklet” to complete the exercises below. The booklet is 40 pages, but for this exercise, you will be locating the components of cause-and-effect writing by examining the table of contents, sub-headings, and the introduction.

Before you begin the exercise, review the components of a cause-and-effect essay.
Exercise prompts
- On the title page, identify which of the terms indicates “effects.” Judging by this title, what structure will this booklet use (cause-then-effect or effect-then-cause)?
- Scroll to the next page, “Contents.” In the title for Part I, what is the causality (cause-and-effect relationship)? In other words, what is the cause and what is the effect?
- Read through all the chapter titles for Parts I, II, and III. Pay attention to the phrases of causation. Which of these parts is focused on causes? What are some of the phrases of causation used that indicate cause?
- Which of these parts is focused on effects? What are some of the phrases of causation used that indicate effect?
- Scroll to the next page with the picture of a bicyclist riding next to a body of water (this has no page number). Read the three paragraphs. The first paragraph is the introduction, but it also provides something else for the reader. What kind of paragraph is this?
- Based on these three paragraphs, SUMMARIZE the thesis of this booklet. In other words, what is the main point of this booklet, what kinds of evidence will be offered, what is the PURPOSE of the writing, and what is the AUDIENCE for the writing?
