Cause and Effect

It is often considered human nature to ask, “why?” and “how?” Parents want to know how a child got sick so they can prevent it from happening in the future. We want to know why a colleague received a pay raise because we want one as well. We want to know how much money we will save over the long term if we buy a hybrid car. Perhaps in your own experience you’ve wondered why you are required to take a certain course in school or what benefit you will gain from it.

Consider your circumstances right now: what kinds of situations are causing you to question what the eventual effects will be? It might be an issue with a roommate, a significant other or a family member. It could be excitement over a job prospect or potential relationship that has you thinking about what the future might hold for you.

These examples identify only a few of the relationships we think about in our lives, but each shows the importance of understanding cause (an event) and effect (the consequences of that event). The relationship between an event and its consequences is called causality.
