External Learning Tools > Manage Tool Providers > New Tool Provider

Step 3: Integration in a Specific Course Shell

Course > Content > Import Course > Import Course Package

Step 1: Getting Candela Authentication Key/Secret for your Institution

  • Lumen shares the LTI key and secret credentials you will need using a secure password vault via http://lastpass.com.
  • To access credentials for your institution, you’ll just need a free LastPass account to access their website. We can send you an invite to LastPass or you can create an account yourself and let us know the email address associated with your LastPass account.
  • You do not need to install LastPass software on your computer to retrieve the credentials from Lumen and we would suggest NOT to install LastPass unless you want to use LastPass to manage your own passwords.
  • Generate your LastPass sharing keys. You’ll see the Generate Sharing Keys link at the upper left of the LastPass web interface once you are logged in.
  • Once you have a LastPass account and sharing keys generated, let us know and we will share a secure note with you via LastPass with Candela LTI credentials. You will receive an email when we share the note.

Step 2: Integration at the Global Organizational Level

Goal: Make a secure, global connection between Lumen Candela and Brightspace to make it easier for other members of your institution to use Candela in Brightspace without having to share deeper technical and authentication information beyond your core LMS administration team.

External Learning Tools > Manage Tool Providers > New Tool ProviderScreen Shot 2015-10-07 at 9.17.53 AM

Each institution should only need to add Candela as a Tool Provider one time. At the global organizational level under Manage Tool Providers, add Candela as a New Tool Provider using the following values:

Launch Point: candelalearning.com

Secret: provided via secure password vault for security

Tool consumer information (if present): Check “Use customer tool consumer information instead of default”

Key: provided via secure password vault for security Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 9.22.52 AM

Name: Lumen Learning Candela

Description (suggested): Courses built from Open Educational Resources (OER) supported by Lumen Learning. Faculty needing help? Contact support@lumenlearning.com.

Contact Email (suggested): support@lumenlearning.com

Visibility: Check “Allow users to use this tool provider”

Security Settings: Check all. Candela makes use of this information to track deidentified user activity but does not store personally identifiable information for access or use.

Make tool provider available to: global Org Unit or appropriate Org Unit, but also make sure to apply to all descendants.

Step 3: Integration in a Specific Course Shell

Goal: Connect a specific Brightspace course shell to a specific Candela course tailored for your institution, course and/or instructor.

Course > Content > Import Course > Import Course PackageScreen Shot 2015-10-07 at 9.24.48 AM

Upload Candela course cartridge (ThinCC) provided by Lumen.

Choose Advanced Options to see or tailor the import.

After import, your Brightspace course will have a Table of Contents containing every module/chapter and page from the appropriate Candela course. You can then further customize your course, adding other Brightspace materials (eg, assessments, discussions, etc) into these imported modules, or moving, renaming or deleting imported modules or pages in Brightspace. Changes in Brightspace will not affect original Candela courses.Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 9.25.35 AM

Lumen Mastery LTI Integration with D2L/Brightspace

Supplemental Documentation

Step 1: Getting Candela Authentication Key/Secret for your Institution

Step 2: Integration at the Global Organizational Level

Step 3: Integration in a Specific Course Shell

Step 1: Getting Authentication Keys/Secrets for your Institution

  • Lumen shares the LTI key and secret credentials you will need using a secure password vault via http://lastpass.com.
  • To access credentials for your institution, you’ll just need a free LastPass account to access their website. We can send you an invite to LastPass or you can create an account yourself and let us know the email address associated with your LastPass account.
  • You do not need to install LastPass software on your computer to retrieve the credentials from Lumen and we would suggest NOT to install LastPass unless you want to use LastPass to manage your own passwords.

Step 2: Integration at the Global Organizational Level

Goal: Make a secure, global connection between Brightspace and three (3) tools that comprise Lumen Mastery  to make it easier for other members of your institution to use Lumen Mastery in Brightspace without having to share deeper technical and authentication information beyond your core LMS administration team.

Tools to Add

Complete this step (instructions below) once for each of the following tools.

  1. Candela content platform
Note: Each institution should only need to add Candela as an External Learning Tool one time. If your institution already has a global LTI connection to Candela set up, do not set it up again.
    Name: Lumen Candela Open Courses
    Launch Point: candelalearning.com
  2. Assessment engine
    Name: Lumen Assessments
    Launch Point: assessments.lumenlearning.com
  3. Personalized teaching toolset (formerly known as “Nurture”)
    Name: Lumen Waymaker
    Launch Point: goldilocks.lumenlearning.com

Add ToolsScreen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.07.51 AM

  1. At the global organizational level, go to: External Learning Tools > Manage Tool Providers > New Tool Provider
  2. Add the Lumen Mastery tools  as New Tool Providers using the following values:

Launch Point: Use launch point specified above for each tool

Secret: provided via secure password vault for security

Tool consumer information (if present): Check “Use customer tool consumer information instead of default”

Key: provided via secure password vault for security

Name: Use name specified above for each toolScreen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.08.47 AM

Description (suggested): Courses built from Open Educational Resources (OER) supported by Lumen Learning. Faculty needing help? Contact support@lumenlearning.com.

Contact Email (suggested): support@lumenlearning.com

Visibility: Check “Allow users to use this tool provider”

Security Settings: Check all. Lumen Mastery tools make use of this information to track deidentified user activity in Candela and to facilitate email communications to students via Nurture.

Make tool provider available to: global Org Unit or appropriate Org Unit, but also make sure to apply to all descendants.

Step 3: Integration in a Specific Course Shell

Goal: Connect a specific Brightspace course shell to a specific Lumen Mastery course tailored for your institution, course and/or instructor.

Upload Lumen Mastery Course CartridgeScreen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.11.10 AM

Go to: Course > Content > Import Course > Import Course Package

Upload Lumen Mastery course cartridge (ThinCC) provided by Lumen.

Most often: Choose Import All Components.

Uncommon: Choose Advanced Options to see or tailor the import.Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.13.03 AM

After import, your Brightspace course will have a Table of Contents containing every module/chapter, page and assessment from the appropriate Lumen Mastery course.

Post-Import Setup

Currently, it is necessary to manually un-publish the instructor resources module and to create grade items for the quizzes and research consent form and attach them to the appropriate LTI launches. When a course is copied, these settings and grade item links copy as desired. So these steps only need to be done one time per master course. We hope to make this more automated in the future.

Un-publish the Instructor Resources Module and Links

Go to: Course > Content > Table of Contents > Instructor Resources: Leave Unpublished

Un-publish the module by clicking on “Published” and changing it to “Draft.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.13.42 AM

Un-publish each link in the module by:

  1. clicking on the arrow to the right of each link title and then on “Edit Properties In-place”Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.14.07 AM
  2. clicking on “Published” and changing it to “Draft;” when you are finished, “Draft” should appear to the right of each link.Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.14.37 AM
Link Quizzes and the Research Consent Form to the Grade Book

There is one Research Consent form in a dedicated module, and there is one  Quiz at the end of each content module. For each Quiz and the Research Consent Form:

  1. Go the module item page (where you see the actual quiz), scroll to the bottom until you see “Activity Details,” and click “Add a grade item”Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.15.06 AM
  2. Then click the plus sign
Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.15.36 AM
  3. Fill out the grade item info, using either the default settings below or whatever makes sense for your classes, and press “Create”
    • Default points: 20 points per quiz and 5 points for the Research Consent
    • Default groups: Put quizzes in a group called “Quizzes”Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.19.51 AM
  4. Back on the module item page, press “save”, then you’re done. It’s easy to miss this step, so be careful!Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 10.20.36 AM

Customization

You can then further customize your course, adding other Brightspace materials (eg, assignments, discussions, etc) into these imported modules, or moving, renaming or deleting imported modules or pages in Brightspace. Changes in Brightspace will not affect original Lumen Mastery courses in Candela or the Assessment engine.

General instructions for customizing courses are provided in the Lumen Mastery Faculty Training.
