The transition to motherhood is not always a smooth process. According to Postpartum Support International, Postpartum Depression (PPD), also known as Peripartum Onset, is the most common complication of childbirth, yet it is rarely talked about.
STEP 1: Watch the TedxTalk, “Why We All Need to Talk About Postpartum Depression.” https://youtu.be/K_3NlTtybIA
STEP 2: Read an article on peripartum depression, such as this one. https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline. Look for additional relevant articles and information.
STEP 3: Create a poster or infographic that addresses signs, symptoms, and treatment related to peripartum depression. This can be done as a powerpoint slide, or using a program of your choice, such as Canva or PiktoChart. Include appropriate citations and references in your post.
The following is an example infographic from the CDC on maternal depression.
Next, share your creation with the world so that others can benefit from your work! Using either Flickr or Wikimedia Commons, upload your finished product and publish it so that other sociology instructors and students can use and reference your work. Although not required, we strongly recommend uploading and releasing your work with a Creative Commons license.
STEP 4: In an essay (400-500 words), respond to the following
- Summarize the TED talk, emphasizing the speaker’s main points
- What did you find most interesting about the presenter’s experiences and what will you most likely remember from the talk?
- From your research, what are the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression and why do you think so many women are hesitant to share their stories?
- What would you say to a friend or family member who was experiencing postpartum depression?
STEP 5: Submit your poster and essay into the discussion forum. Be sure to include references in your submission.
