Review the definition of accessibility from this module, focusing on the goals that accessibility policies are meant to address.
For your first post to this thread, you’ll need to do some field research on your campus and in the neighborhood around campus.
Step 1: Locate a single example of a feature on your campus that has been modified or purpose-built to accommodate an individual who is differently-abled or who has special needs.
Step 2: Now locate a similarly specialized feature near campus, but off campus.
Step 3: In your discussion post, describe the similarities and differences of these two examples. Do they seem equally useful and well-executed? Does one seem more general in its purpose and one more specific to an educational setting? Why or why not? What are the two examples meant to enable?
Step 4: For your second post to the thread, respond to at least one classmate (or two if you’re feeling ambitious), comparing their field research to yours.
Be sure to discuss the following questions:
- Did you both understand accessibility in the same way?
- How were your examples similar or different from theirs?
- What are all of the activities enabled by these infrastructural accommodations? How narrowly applicable is the technology?
- Did either of you identify places on and immediately off campus that might benefit from adding accessibility resources?
