Here\u2019s how alcohol can affect your body and brain:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Brain:\u00a0<\/b>Alcohol interferes with the brain\u2019s communication pathways and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Heart:\u00a0<\/b>Drinking a lot over a long time or too much on a single occasion can damage the heart, causing problems such as stroke, high blood pressure, and\u00a0arrhythmia.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Liver:\u00a0<\/b>Heavy drinking takes a toll on the liver and can lead to a variety of problems such as alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Pancreas:\u00a0<\/b>Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually lead to pancreatitis, a dangerous inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the pancreas that prevents proper digestion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Cancer:\u00a0<\/b>Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of developing certain cancers, including cancers of the mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Immune system:\u00a0<\/b>Drinking too much can weaken your immune system, making your body a much easier target for disease. Chronic drinkers are more liable to contract diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who do not drink too much. Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your body\u2019s ability to ward off infections\u2014even up to twenty-hour hours after getting drunk.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Drinking Levels Defined<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\r\nSo how much is drinking too much? The following guidelines are from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism:\r\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Moderate alcohol consumption<\/b>:\u00a0According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, moderate drinking is up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Binge drinking<\/b>:\u00a0Binge drinking is\u00a0a pattern of drinking that brings blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels to 0.08 g\/dL, which typically occurs after four drinks for women and five drinks for men within about two hours. Binge drinking has become a major health and safety issue\u00a0on college campuses.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Heavy drinking<\/b>:\u00a0Heavy drinking is defined as\u00a0drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion on five consecutive days or more in the past 30 days.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"li2\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\"><b>Low risk for developing an alcohol use disorder<\/b>:\u00a0For women, low-risk drinking is no more than three drinks on any single day and no more than seven drinks per week. For men, it's defined as no more than four drinks on any single day and no more than fourteen drinks per week.
