Step 1: Choose and read a news article in a reputable newspaper or magazine. The choice of publication is up to you, although it should be 1) reputable [see the module on finding credible sources] and 2) accessible on the internet for free. If you’re not sure where to start, The Conversation is a good source, and Creative Commons licensed.
Step 2: Write a 150-200 word letter to the editor in response to the article. Here are some tips from the ACLU about how to write a successful letter to the editor. For a deeper dive into letters to the editor, here is a guide with examples from The New York Times.
Step 3: Publish your letter in the discussion forum, along with a link to the original article.
Step 4: Respond in two separate posts to two classmates (in at least 75 words for each). What do you think was most effective about their letter? Is there anything you’d add to make it more effective?
