In this discussion, you will apply your understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos by analyzing how a commercial connects with its audience. Effective arguments often use a balance of these three appeals.
Discussion Instructions
STEP 1: Find a short commercial for a product on YouTube to analyze. Copy and paste the URL into your discussion post so others can view it.
STEP 2: Write a 150-200 word analysis discussing how the commercial uses ethos, pathos, and logos. Consider the following questions as you write:
- Ethos: How does the commercial establish credibility? Does it feature a trustworthy spokesperson, use expert opinions, or showcase brand reputation?
- Pathos: What emotions does the commercial evoke? How do visuals, music, language, or storytelling appeal to the audience’s feelings?
- Logos: What logical appeals are used? Does the commercial provide facts, data, comparisons, or persuasive reasoning to support its message?
Provide specific examples from the commercial to support your analysis.
STEP 3: After posting your analysis, watch the commercials and respond to the posts of two classmates. Write at least 75-100 words per response, building on their observations. Consider using these prompts to guide your replies:
- Do you agree with their assessment of ethos, pathos, and logos? Did you notice any additional examples that support or challenge their analysis?
- How do the appeals work together to influence the audience? Are some appeals more effective than others?
- What additional thoughts or questions do you have about the commercial or its persuasive techniques?
Be respectful and thoughtful in your responses. Avoid repeating what others have said—provide specific feedback, new insights, or a different perspective to engage in a meaningful conversation.
