Module 9 Discussion: Letters to the Editor

In this discussion, you will engage with current events and practice expressing your opinion by writing a letter to the editor. Letters to the editor provide an opportunity to respond to news articles and share your perspective on important topics.

Discussion Instructions

STEP 1: Select a news article from a reputable newspaper or magazine that is accessible online for free. If you’re unsure where to start, consider using sources like The Conversation, which offers Creative Commons licensed articles. Ensure the article is recent and relevant to a topic of interest to you.

STEP 2: Write a 150-200 word letter responding to the article (your “letter to the editor”). You can agree, disagree, expand on a point made, or offer an additional perspective. Use these resources to guide your writing:

Make your letter clear, respectful, and focused. Support your views with reasoning and evidence where appropriate.

STEP 3: Post your letter to the editor in the discussion forum. Include a link to the original article so your classmates can read it for context.

STEP 4: Read and respond to two classmates’ posts. Each response should be at least 75 words. In your response, provide feedback on what you found effective about their letter. Did their points resonate with you? Was their argument well-supported? Offer constructive suggestions for improvement if applicable. How could they strengthen their argument or clarify their perspective?
