Module 5 Discussion: Locating and Evaluating Sources: Two Truths and a Lie

  1. Choose a topic you’re interested in. It does not have to be a serious issue; it could, for instance, be a favorite musician or movie, or a place you’re interested in visiting someday. Set a timer and spend 10 minutes searching the web for information about this topic. Try to visit at least four different sites in this time. Collect two facts about your topic that you’d like to share with the class.
  2. Reflect on your reading practices as you are moving around the Web. Take notes on the following: How do you tend to move from one site to the next? Do you open new tabs? Follow hyperlinks? Do you move deliberately or haphazardly? What are you learning about yourself as a digital reader as you pay attention to your practices?
  3.  In the discussion board, post your topic and three facts: the two you found during your web search mixed in with one plausible but made-up fact. Try to fool your classmates with the lie.
  4. Choose one classmate’s post and spend no more than two minutes fact-checking it. Can you tell which “fact” is the lie? Write your guess in the comments.
