However, when academics use the word\u00a0argument, they intend a fairly specific meaning\u2014a meaning that actually goes back to the Latin verb\u00a0<em>arguere:\u00a0<\/em>to clarify, assert, declare, prove, or show.[footnote]https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/arguo#Latin[\/footnote]\r\n\r\nIf you think of argument as a \"proof,\" you're getting closer to the way it tends to be used in academic contexts.
