In this discussion, we'll practice introducing quotations with signal phrases, correctly formatting the quotation, and then unpacking the quotation with a short explanation.

Discussion Instructions

STEP 1: Select a quote that resonates with you. This could be a favorite quote from someone you admire, a passage from a book, a memorable song lyric, or a quote from a movie. Consider why this quote stands out to you and how it conveys meaning.

STEP 2: Write an introduction using a signal phrase to set up your quote. Think about how the quote is delivered. Is it said, sung, growled, whispered, or proclaimed? Your signal phrase can provide context by explaining who said it, where it’s from, or why it’s significant.

STEP 3: Present your quote using the correct formatting. If it’s longer than five lines, consider paraphrasing or summarizing instead of using a block quote. Ensure that the quote is punctuated and cited correctly (if applicable).

STEP 4: Write a short explanation (100-150 words) interpreting your quote. Why did you choose this quote? What meaning do you take from it? How does it resonate with you personally or connect to a broader idea? Consider the impact of the quote’s tone, word choice, and context. Provide enough context for your classmates to understand the quote without needing prior knowledge.

Post your quote with its signal phrase, along with your short explanation, in the discussion board.

STEP 5: Read and respond to two classmates’ posts. Each response should be at least 75 words. In your response, reflect on their analysis. Do you interpret the quote similarly or differently? Did their perspective offer new insights into the quote’s meaning? Feel free to ask questions, share your thoughts, or provide additional context about the quote if you’re familiar with it.

Rubric

Sample Grading Rubric

Criteria

Proficient

Developing

Not Evident

Points

Follows prompt directions

Follows the prompt instructions.

Somewhat follows the prompt instructions.
