After all, storytelling is fundamental. Although the format and details vary widely, professional and academic narratives are not nearly as different from fairy tales as they may first seem. In each case, our basic expectations for information and action operate in similar ways:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul id=\"id6501169\">\r\n \t<li>we look for clear subjects as our new \u201ccharacters\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li>we look for strong verbs as our new \u201cactions.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p id=\"id6501187\">Stories work through structure. We understand story better when we can easily recognize\u00a0<strong>characters<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>actions<\/strong>. Until we know what is happening and to whom, we are likely to feel lost<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id6501206\">Story structure is apparent on both the sentence and the paragraph level. Whereas good storytelling makes important characters and actions clear from the outset, inadequate storytelling:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul id=\"id9405632\">\r\n \t<li>takes a long time to convey a sense of what\u2019s being described or explained;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>doesn\u2019t make the problem clear;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>doesn\u2019t give readers reasons to be invested in reading;<\/li>\r\n \t<li>doesn\u2019t offer a solution to the problems it dramatizes for the reader.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Story and Research Writing<\/h2>\r\nSome of the same reasons we might cite for enjoying a movie or a novel also hold true for a scientific report or a legal argument. We are motivated to read, and we feel we understand the point of an argument, when we quickly grasp a) <strong>who<\/strong> is concerned and b) <strong>what<\/strong> is at stake.\r\n\r\nFor example:\r\n<blockquote>The suggestion of recent evidence has been a role for nanobacteria in a growing number of human diseases, including renal stone formation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Promoted by this large body of research studies is the view that nanobacteria are not only alive but that they are associated with disease pathogenesis. (Martel and Young, 5549)<\/blockquote>\r\nContrast with:\r\n<blockquote><strong>Recent evidence<\/strong> [noun] <strong>suggests<\/strong> [verb] a role for nanobacteria in a growing number of human diseases, including renal stone formation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. <strong>This large body of research studies<\/strong> [noun] <strong>promotes<\/strong> [verb] the view that nanobacteria are not only alive but that they are associated with disease pathogenesis. (Martel and Young, 5549)<\/blockquote>\r\nIn the example above, a few simple improvements lead to a much more readable statement of the problem. Notice how the sentences in the revised paragraph\r\n<ul id=\"id6486685\">\r\n \t<li>lead with a clear subject<\/li>\r\n \t<li>follow immediately with a descriptive verb.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p id=\"id6486698\">The parts of the sentence that satisfy the reader\u2019s basic needs are strongly positioned to give them the information they need as quickly and concisely as possible. The character, \u201crecent evidence,\u201d and the action, \u201csuggests\u201d appear within the first three words of the first sentence. Similarly, the second sentence begins right away with the character \u201cthis large body of research studies,\u201d and follows up immediately with the verb \u201cpromotes\u201d to describe the action of those studies. We know the main characters and actions RIGHT AWAY, and we are able to grasp the important subject and activity that the sentence describes without searching around for clues.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/section><section id=\"id-648110234538\" data-depth=\"1\">\r\n<h2 data-type=\"title\">Characters and Actions- Structuring Information, Managing Expectations<\/h2>\r\n<p id=\"id9439292\">In talking about sentences that tell stories, we\u2019ve already begun to realize the importance of two key terms\u2014Character and Action. We understand narrative best when it is easy to identify the important characters and actions (and along with them, the important subject and verb of the sentence). The character is the main subject or \u201cdoer\u201d in your sentence.\u201d (Remember: It is not always a person). The action is the thing done. Usually, the action is the verb. All too frequently we bury the most important action in nominalizations. We\u2019ll discuss nominalizations in more detail a little later on. For now, it requires no special terminology to see how, in order to make it easy for readers to understand your writing, you should:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul id=\"id9439323\">\r\n \t<li>match important actions to VERBS; and<\/li>\r\n \t<li>make important characters into SIMPLE SUBJECTS (see Style 33).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p id=\"id9439338\">These crucial alignments often dictate changes in the order in which characters and actions appear in a sentence. Instead of:<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id9439342\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cOur loss of funding prevented continuation of the research program.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id9656080\">We can write:<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id9656084\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cBecause\u00a0<strong>we<\/strong>\u00a0lost funding,\u00a0<strong>we<\/strong>\u00a0could not continue the research program.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p id=\"id9656101\">In the first sentence, \u201closs\u201d and \u201ccontinuation\u201d are used as nouns instead of describing what the main character does through the more active \u201cwe lost\u201d and \u201cwe could not continue\u201d (see Style 36).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<section id=\"id-159759081266\" data-depth=\"2\">\r\n<h3 data-type=\"title\">Choose Concrete Characters Over Abstract<\/h3>\r\n<p id=\"id9656119\">Notice how difficult it can be to identify the main characters and actions in an introductory sentence:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p id=\"id9656125\">Shifts in position in recent decades in three bands of fast-moving wind known as jet streams came from a new analysis of weather data that were collected between 1979 and 2001.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p id=\"id9656132\">Here, by leading with \u201cShifts in position,\u201d an author would effectively emphasize \u201cshifts\u201d as the main character of the sentence. Similarly, the verb that modifies \u201cshifts,\u201d \u201ccame,\u201d appears as the main action of the statement (see Craft 244). Compare this to the sentence as it actually appeared in publication:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p id=\"id9656137\">\u201c<strong>Three bands of fast-moving wind\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 known as jet streams \u2014 have shifted position in recent decades, according to a new analysis of weather data that were collected between 1979 and 2001\u201d (\u201cAtmospheric science: Jetting away\u201d).<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p id=\"id6491914\">Notice how the important subjects and verbs a) appear early, and b) occur close to each other.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Applying the Lessons of Story- The Sentence Level<\/h2>\r\nReaders expect for sentences to deliver information using a certain predictable structure. When writers fulfill readers\u2019 expectations, they make it easy for them to process important pieces of information efficiently and effectively. What if it isn\u2019t immediately clear what your main subject should be? Ask yourself what the most important action of the sentence really is. Now determine who or what is responsible for that action.\r\n\r\nWhen you put your main character first, you give the reader essential information about the main actors in the drama they will be asked to follow. You also create a context in which the reader can understand what you will go on to say about that character.\r\n<h3>Clear Sentences<\/h3>\r\nEasy-to-understand sentences are not the product of some subtle mystery. We prefer them because we can recognize their key information:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>\u201cAs <strong>John<\/strong> [character] <strong>remarked<\/strong> [action] earlier...\u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\u201cAs <strong>Mary<\/strong> [character] <strong>argued<\/strong> [action] \u2026 \u201d<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\u201cAs <strong>our results<\/strong> [character] <strong>demonstrate<\/strong> [action]\u2026 \u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nThis is not to say that your main character must always be the subject of your sentence, or that character\u2019s action is always represented by the verb. However, if readers find your writing confusing or unclear, it\u2019s a safe bet that one of these things is throwing them off. If your most important character is not the main subject of your sentence, and if that character\u2019s most important action is not represented by the sentence\u2019s main verb, a good first step is to locate each of these and align them with one another!\r\n<h2>Choosing Characters and Emphasizing Actions<\/h2>\r\nAchieving optimal placement of characters and actions in your sentences is as much about diagnosis and revision as it is about drafting or composition. Williams and Colomb present a step-by-step system for finding and relocating characters. Characters and actions should occur early in the sentence. Whenever possible, character and action should correspond with subject and verb. Compare this to the sentence as it actually appeared in publication:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"id9656137\">\u201c<strong>Three bands of fast-moving wind\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 known as jet streams \u2014 have shifted position in recent decades, according to a new analysis of weather data that were collected between 1979 and 2001\u201d (\u201cAtmospheric science: Jetting away\u201d).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"id6491914\">Notice how the important subjects and verbs a) appear early, and b) occur close to each other.<\/p>\n<h2>Applying the Lessons of Story- The Sentence Level<\/h2>\n<p>Readers expect for sentences to deliver information using a certain predictable structure. When writers fulfill readers\u2019 expectations, they make it easy for them to process important pieces of information efficiently and effectively. What if it isn\u2019t immediately clear what your main subject should be? Ask yourself what the most important action of the sentence really is. Now determine who or what is responsible for that action.<\/p>\n<p>When you put your main character first, you give the reader essential information about the main actors in the drama they will be asked to follow. You also create a context in which the reader can understand what you will go on to say about that character.<\/p>\n<h3>Clear Sentences<\/h3>\n<p>Easy-to-understand sentences are not the product of some subtle mystery. We prefer them because we can recognize their key information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAs <strong>John<\/strong> [character] <strong>remarked<\/strong> [action] earlier&#8230;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAs <strong>Mary<\/strong> [character] <strong>argued<\/strong> [action] \u2026 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAs <strong>our results<\/strong> [character] <strong>demonstrate<\/strong> [action]\u2026 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is not to say that your main character must always be the subject of your sentence, or that character\u2019s action is always represented by the verb. However, if readers find your writing confusing or unclear, it\u2019s a safe bet that one of these things is throwing them off. If your most important character is not the main subject of your sentence, and if that character\u2019s most important action is not represented by the sentence\u2019s main verb, a good first step is to locate each of these and align them with one another!<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing Characters and Emphasizing Actions<\/h2>\n<p>Achieving optimal placement of characters and actions in your sentences is as much about diagnosis and revision as it is about drafting or composition. Williams and Colomb present a step-by-step system for finding and relocating characters. They teach us to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skim the first seven or eight words;<\/li>\n<li>Identify the main characters;<\/li>\n<li>Locate actions involving those characters;<\/li>\n<li>Organize your new subjects and verbs into a sentence using conjunctions such as if, although, because, when, how, and why (Style 53-54).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019ll walk through the process using an example here.<\/p>\n<h3>Step One: Skim the first seven or eight words.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The introduction of a novel thermal convection cell<\/strong> consisting of half a soap bubble heated at the equator enables the study of thermal convection and the movement of isolated vortices. <strong>Development of thermal convection at its equator<\/strong> is noted in the soap bubble, which is subject to stratification.<\/p>\n<h3>Step Two: Identify the main characters<\/h3>\n<p>The introduction of <strong>a novel thermal convection cell<\/strong> consisting of half a soap bubble heated at the equator enables the study of thermal convection and the movement of isolated vortices. Development of thermal convection at its equator is noted in the soap bubble, which is subject to stratification.<\/p>\n<h3>Step Four: Organize your new subjects and verbs so that the actions are expressed in verbs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The noun &#8216;introduction&#8221; becomes the verb &#8220;to introduce&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The noun &#8220;development&#8221; becomes the verb &#8220;to develop&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the published version from which our less elegant example was derived, the main characters appear early and are described by the main verbs:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong>A novel thermal convection cell<\/strong> consisting of half a soap bubble heated at the equator is <strong>introduced<\/strong> to study thermal convection and the movement of isolated vortices.<strong> The soap bubble<\/strong>, subject to stratification, <strong>develops<\/strong> thermal convection at its equator\u201d (Seychelles, F., et al.).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Naming a Problem: Nominalizations<\/h2>\n<p>Nominalizations are abstract nouns that are derived from either verbs or adjectives.<\/p>\n<p>They often end in suffixes like -tion, -ment, -ence, among others. For example, calculation (from \u2018to calculate\u2019), finding (from \u2018to find\u2019), and dependent (from \u2018to depend\u2019) (Style 36).<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%; height: 52px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 13px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">Verb &lt; Nominalization<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">Adjective &lt; Nominalization<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 13px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">DISCOVER &lt; Discovery<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">CARELESS &lt; Carelessness<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 13px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">RESIST &lt; Resistance<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">DIFFERENT&lt; Difference<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 13px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">REACT &lt; Reaction<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 50%; height: 13px;\">PROFICIENT&lt; Proficiency<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>As you read the following example, ask yourself:<\/p>\n<p>How quickly are you able to identify characters and actions?<br \/>\nWhat makes it easy or difficult?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is <strong>disagreement<\/strong> among many <strong>experts<\/strong> about the <strong>utility<\/strong> of <strong>emissions cap-and-trade policies<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now notice how much easier it is to understand the sentence when we change the order of the main characters and verbs to read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong>Experts<\/strong> <strong>disagree<\/strong> [important verb] about whether <strong>emissions cap-and-trade policies<\/strong> <strong>are<\/strong> <strong>useful<\/strong>.\u201d [a verb and an adjective replace the nominalization \u201cutility\u201d]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, observe how it clarifies the sentence when we take a nominalization like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur request [noun\/nominalization] is [weaker verb] that you review the data.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And change it to:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe [subject\/character] request [stronger verb] that you review the data.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Bottom Line<\/h2>\n<p>In order to make your sentences clear and easy to understand, align the main character and action with the main subject and verb.<\/p>\n<p>The moral of the story is: Make sure readers get the story! Characters and actions should occur early in the sentence. Whenever possible, character and action should correspond with subject and verb.
