The two underlying\u00a0elements of a government are power and authority\u2014as sociologists, let's examine them both separately, and then consider how they may be interrelated.\r\n\r\nPower is an entity's or individual\u2019s ability to control or direct others, while authority is influence that is predicated on perceived legitimacy.\u00a0Consequently, power is necessary for authority, but it is possible to have power without authority.
