Two obvious applications for negotiation are\u00a0conflict management\u00a0and\u00a0procurement. These two examples illustrate the breadth of situations where negotiation skills need to be applied. Addressing personal conflict often involves emotional and cultural issues whereas procurement negotiation is usually about contractual terms and conditions.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5785\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/courses-images\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2986\/2018\/03\/23205414\/FloorWorld_1-1024x246.png\" alt=\"Two different groups of people facing one another in a stand off.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"246\" \/>\r\n<h2>Good Negotiator<\/h2>\r\nWhatever the context, there are common factors that exemplify a good negotiator:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability to describe common goals and boundaries;<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional control and equal treatment of all parties;<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good listening and\u00a0communication\u00a0skills;<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thorough knowledge of bargaining tactics;<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an ability to close a negotiation in a way that secures the outcome.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Negotiation Procedure<\/h2>\r\nRegardless of whether the negotiation is competitive or collaborative, it usually follows a typical procedure:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plan:<\/strong> All parties should prepare thoroughly. This includes gathering as much information as possible; setting goals for the outcome and agreeing an escalation route if the negotiation is unsuccessful. Each party should attempt to understand the cultural, commercial and ethical background of the others.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Discuss:<\/strong> Set the scene, identify the key issues and communicate the objectives. Listen, question and feedback regularly to confirm understanding.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Propose:<\/strong> Propose a solution that is clear and unambiguous.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bargain:<\/strong> Discuss the proposal; communicate personal boundaries and areas of flexibility.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Agree:<\/strong> Reach agreement on the core issues; document what has been agreed and record any peripheral, outstanding items with timescales for resolving them.<\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Implement:<\/strong> Communicate the outcome of the negotiation as necessary, update management.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nNegotiation is easy to get wrong. The cardinal sin is to enter into negotiations unprepared. This can easily lead to mistakes such as making opening offers that are clearly unacceptable to the other parties.\r\n\r\nSpecifically for a retailer, negotiations can be internally or externally focused. Internal negotiations typically are between departments. The merchandise buying office may negotiate for additional space for their product presentation with the store organization.
