Disparities can be seen in every aspect of life. A critical and worrisome disparity is often seen in healthcare. Health disparities are preventable, which makes their prevalence problematic (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Health disparities are complex issues that are influenced by a variety of factors. Factors discussed include poverty, individual behavior, and the environment. Underlying factors also include education and socioeconomic status, which inhibits or enables an individual to be in healthier environments (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Since health disparities are preventable, there are several solutions, including changing the context and education about disparities.
Public health interventions are critical in reducing the burdens of health disparities. As future public health professionals, it is important to understand not only the causes of health disparities, but all of their consequences as well. There are many levels of impact that are not always considered when dealing with health disparities, and a broad understanding of these issues will aid improving the lives of those most affected by health disparities.
