Topic 9: Illness Cognitions, Adherence, and Patient-Practitioner Interactions

What happens psychologically when a person transitions from being healthy to being a patient? This topic examines the “sick role” and how people recognize symptoms, interpret illness, and decide when to seek treatment. We will explore the psychological landscape of the hospital setting, the roots of medical treatment delays, and the dynamics of patient-provider communication. We will place a heavy emphasis on dismantling systemic barriers, looking closely at cultural and gender stereotyping, and evaluating how providers can deliver culturally competent, gender-affirming care to transgender and non-binary individuals.
