STEP 1: Respond to the following reflection question before watching the Ted talk.
- Personality disorders involve maladaptive traits that interfere with daily functioning and tend to cause significant personal distress. Should they be considered disorders, or are they simply indicative of an individual’s personality? Does the label of disorder excuse and promote a lack of responsibility over maladaptive behaviors and inappropriate expressions?
STEP 2: Watch the following Ted talk by Paul Fiann. Select one of the personality disorders covered in this module, then, in light of what you learned from the video:
- Briefly summarize the key characteristics of the disorder
- Explain the biggest challenges proposed and weaknesses faced due to the traits
- Identify potential benefits and strengths of the maladaptive traits
STEP 3: Discuss something interesting you learned from the video. Has this video influenced your perspective of personality disorders? Will it affect the way you perceive the individual expression of maladaptive or abnormal personality traits?
STEP 4: Respond in two separate posts to two classmates (in at least 75 words). Explicitly address their responses and try to extend, complicate, or redirect their points in a substantive, knowledge-demonstrating way.
