In the module Motivating Success, we provide general guidance to understand the different learning styles in Theories of Learning. For this discussion, you are going to reflect on your preferences as a learner. There are no right or wrong answers with this reflection because this is about your personal preference as a learner.
Directions
Step 1: Review the types of learning preferences. Consider if you prefer more than one learning style. Consider if none of these learning preferences work for you.
Step 2: Take a minute to reflect. In a sentence, answer the following question that best applies to your experience with learning styles. If you learned about them before, in which course did you encounter them? If you have never learned about them, what was most surprising to you?
Step 3: Let’s do an inventory about your learning preferences. Complete the following sentences:
- When I research using the Internet, I like to __________.
- When I listen to a teacher in class, I record what I learned by _________.
- When I am planning a trip, I like to research ___________.
- In order to find a store that a friend recommended, I __________.
- When I need to repair something at home, I like to ____________.
Step 4: Review your answers to reflect on multi-modal learning. Which of these intelligence modes best describes your learning preferences? Are you practical, creative, or analytical? Write two-three sentences for your answer.
Step 5: Reflect on your answers. What might your preferred learning style(s) and your intelligence mode tell you about your interests? Write a paragraph where you consider which subjects and/o eventual careers you might like based on this exercise.
