Hay is a verb used to talk about what does or does not exist. In English, we use two statements to express existence, “there is” (singular) and “there are” (plural). In Spanish, hay is used for both singular and plural. When using hay, you don’t use the definite article: el, la, los, or las.
 En el dormitorio, hay una ventana y una puerta. |

| En el refrigerador, hay una botella de cerveza. |

| En el salón de clase, hay veinte pupitres. |
When you make a negative statement with hay, you usually do not use any article after the verb.
