Ordinal numbers are used to arrange people or things like days, months, books, etc. in order. Grammatically, they function as adjectives, and thus must agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.
- La primera muchacha en la fila es Marisa.
- El primer mes del año es enero.
- Mi quinta clase es francés.
- El cuarto día de la semana es miércoles.
The ordinal adjectives that express first and third are unique—before masculine singular nouns, they drop the –o ending, as you can see in the second example above.
