In addition to expressing the location of places, people, and things, estar has other important and useful functions. With the verb estar, you will be able to express actions as they occur, or are in progress. So, in order to say what you are doing in a given moment, or what anyone else is doing, you will be using the verb estar to form the expressions that allow you to say “I am studying,” or “My mom is talking on the phone.” Thus, with the verb estar, you will be able to very vividly describe actions in progress.
